All toll booths on North-South Boulevard will be RFID-enabled by early 2022!

According to a report in The Star, all toll booths on North and South Avenues will have at least one lane that supports RFID-based toll payment. This measure is expected to be implemented in early 2022.

Currently most of the North-South Road toll booths do not support RFID payment function, many road users are complaining about the inconvenience brought by the North-South Road. The North-South Road in the North Malaysia region has been supporting RFID and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) for toll payment since November.

The North-South Road had planned to install RFID systems at 83 closed toll plazas last year, but the government’s Movement Control Order (MCO) has disrupted the North-South Road’s plans.

The so-called RFID payment toll means that road users in the vehicle headlights or windshield stickers RFID, the system will read the RFID sticker information when passing through the toll booth, and from the vehicle owner’s electronic wallet deducted toll. All the vehicle owner needs to do is to slow down the speed.

TNG’s RFID system will work in tandem with the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system to provide a second layer of protection for reading vehicle information, avoiding the problem of incorrectly reading vehicle information. The SmartTAG can only read information from vehicles traveling at 20 km/h.

SmartTAG will not be sold on North and South Avenues from 2018, and the government plans to introduce Multi Lane Free Flow, or MLFF, in 2026. The aim of these measures is to shorten the time it takes for road users to pay tolls and avoid long queues at toll stations.
