All Malaysians must apply for their first MyKad by the age of 16 and apply for and replace it with a second MyKad by the age of 25!
The MyKad is the identity document for Malaysian citizens and all Malaysian citizens aged 12 years and above will be issued with a MyKad. The cardholder’s identity card number, name and address will be clearly displayed on the card.
According to the National Registration Act 1990 (amended in 2007), all Malaysian citizens aged 12 years and above must apply for a Malaysian Card. If a person applies for a card within 30 days of reaching the age of 12 years (counted from the person’s birthday), no application fee is payable.
Citizens must apply for their first card before the age of 16 at the latest, and late applications are subject to a fine of RM10 for every year of delay in applying for a card.
When applying for the first Malaysian Card, the applicant must be accompanied by his/her father, mother or guardian. The applicant must bring along the applicant’s birth certificate, father’s or mother’s identity card. If the address on the parent’s identity card does not match the address where the applicant is currently residing, the applicant is required to bring additional documents to prove the address where he/she is currently residing.
In addition, under the National Registration Act 1990 (amended in 2007), people are also required to change to a second Malaysian card after their 18th birthday and before they turn 25 years old. In order to apply for a second card, you are required to bring along your existing card and if the address on the card does not match with your current address, you are required to bring along additional documents to prove your current address. The replacement fee is RM10.
First Malaysian Card: from the age of 12 years up to the age of 16 years.
