After the busy New Year’s Day holiday on January 1st, when will the next public holiday fall?

According to the 2024 public holiday schedule released by the Malaysian government, in addition to New Year’s Day, there are two public holidays in January, but they are public holidays only in designated states.

January 14th is the birthday of the ruler of Negeri Sembilan. Since this day falls on a Sunday, you will be entitled to a compensatory day off on January 15th (Monday).

January 25 is Thaipusam, and seven states and territories in the country will enjoy the holiday. These seven states and territories are Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Penang and Selangor.

If you can’t enjoy any of the above holidays, the next national public holiday is the Chinese New Year on February 10th and 11th. This year’s Chinese New Year falls on Saturday and Sunday.

Public holidays in January
January 1 (Monday): New Year’s Day (nationwide, except Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis and Terengganu)
January 14 (Sunday): Birthday of the Ruler of Negeri Sembilan (Negri Sembilan only)
January 25 (Thursday): Thaipusam (only in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Penang and Selangor)
