LUAS ordered the factory to stop releasing wastewater at Sungai Langat.
After water pollution was discovered in Sungai Langat this afternoon, the Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) ordered a factory to halt releasing effluent that could potentially cause pollution and to execute rapid clean-up measures.
Hee Loy Sian, head of the State Tourism, Environment, Green Technology, and Orang Asli Affairs Committee, said the order was given under Section 121(1) of the LUAS Enactment 1999, and the factory was cleaning up.
The order was made after LUAS received information from the National Water Service Commission (SPAN) about pollution identified in Sungai Langat at 3.30 p.m. yesterday.
The source of the pollution, according to LUAS investigations, was the discharge of effluent from a factory’s sump.
The Kajang Municipal Council and the Department of Environment triggered a Yellow Code in accordance with the Selangor Water Source Pollution Emergency Manual.
LUAS took three samples, which were transferred to the Department of Chemistry for analysis, and the agency will file an investigative paper under Section 79(1) of the LUAS Enactment 1999.
Around 18 kilometres (km) from the Semenyih 2 water treatment plant, 29.5 kilometres from the Bukit Tampoi water treatment plant, and 40.9 kilometres from the Labohan Dagang water treatment plant, the pollution source was discovered.
Water treatment plants were not shut down as a result of quick action to handle the situation at the site. To ensure that the state’s water supply is secure, LUAS and other connected authorities will execute follow-up mitigating activities and close monitoring.
