Air Selangor will have new rates which will start from August 1st.

Beginning on August 1, Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) would increase its water rates for non-domestic customers, places of worship, and ships by 20 sen per cubic metre.

The average increase, according to Izham Hashim, head of the Selangor Infrastructure and Public Utilities, Modernization of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Committee, was still viewed as modest and excluded domestic consumers.

The rise is from RM2.07 to RM2.62 for 0 to 35 cubic metres for non-domestic consumption, including commercial and industrial, and from RM2.86 to RM2.28 for over 35 cubic metres.

For places of worship, the computation increases to 58 sen for each cubic metre using the pro-rate (per cubic metre) of 46 sen. Every cubic metre will cost RM7 instead of RM4.23 for the shipping category, he said during a press briefing at the Annex Building of the Dewan Negeri Selangor today.

Izham claimed that the new water rate adjustment will aid Air Selangor in its significant capital expenditures necessary to maintain the business.

We have a lot of expenses to cover. the high capex of RM30 million over a 30-year period. We also pay the annual pipe repair costs of about RM150 million, excluding other operational expenses.

RM300M is spent on just the electricity bill each year. Each year, it costs between RM80 and RM100 million to purify water using chemicals. Thus, despite the fact that our rates are some of the lowest in the area, they have substantial (operating) costs.

The change will also assist Air Selangor with plans by the state government to construct new water treatment facilities, replace ageing pipes, and upgrade equipment.

Izham was making a statement in response to the government’s recent decision to retain the water supply rate for household users in Peninsular Malaysia and the Federal Territory of Labuan in light of Malaysians’ increasing cost of living.

The Cabinet also decided on June 22 to raise the rate for special categories and non-domestic users in Peninsular Malaysia and Labuan by 25 sen per cm3 starting on August 1.
