KOTA KINABALU – In a 17-kilometer chase that began today at Jalan Tun Fuad, woman in possession of a stolen four-wheel-drive fled the scene and collided with multiple vehicles.
The 10 a.m. drama occurred after the 35-year-old woman’s Toyota Hilux car was alleged to have been discovered by the true owner near the Kota Kinabalu Handicraft Market.
The owner promptly called the police for assistance, and when the suspect realised what was going on, she fled the scene.
Superintendent George Abd Rakman, Kota Kinabalu District Deputy Chief of Police, stated that after receiving the report, a police MPV patrol unit team was able to find the stolen car being driven on Jalan Tanjung Lipat here.
However, when requested stop the vehicle by the police , the suspect defied their orders and instead accelerated the vehicle in order to flee.
“Two MPVs which were assisted by a traffic team tried again to stop the suspect’s vehicle from entering into the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) area, but the suspect crashed through the roadblock and sped-off towards Jalan Sepanggar.
“In front of the Tebobon traffic light, Jalan Sepanggar, the suspect’s vehicle was caught in the traffic congestion. As we tried to stop her, the suspect again tried to escape using the emergency lane,” he said today.
According to George, the suspect, realising she couldn’t flee, reversed and attacked a police officer, wounding him.
He said that after a 17-kilometer chase, the pursuing police team had no choice but to fire several shots at the suspect’s 4WD tyres, leading the suspect’s car to come to a halt.
“The police crew then shattered the front glass of the suspect’s vehicle and detained the suspect for further action.”
“An initial check saw syabu being found believed to be for the suspect’s consumption,” he said.
According to George, the suspect is a local unemployed woman.
He stated that the case is being investigated under Penal Code Section 307, which provides for a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison if convicted.
