A senior citizen was killed in a conflagration at shophouse on Jonker Walk.

Last night, an elderly woman died after being trapped in a burning shop on Jonker Walk.

Koo Kim Foong, 75, received burns over at least 70% of her body in the 9.37pm incident, according to a Melaka Fire and Rescue Department spokeswoman.

Firefighters discovered the victim unresponsive, and a medical officer pronounced her dead on the site. When contacted here today, he stated the fire included two temporary shophouses that were around 80% destroyed.

The Melaka Tengah and Padang Temu fire stations sent 23 firefighters and two fire engines to the incident. The fire was put out in less than 20 minutes, but the origin of the incident and the extent of the losses are still being investigated.
