A fourth dose of the vaccine may soon be needed as cases of Omicron spread around the world, according to Pfizer CEO Bora. It was originally expected that the fourth dose would need to be administered 12 months after the third dose of the vaccine, but some experts predict that it may need to be administered sooner than expected.
The third dose of Pfizer’s vaccine is now administered within six months of the completion of the second dose, and the interval between doses of the fourth vaccine may also be shortened, possibly to six or nine months, rather than the previously expected 12 months.
Antibodies were significantly lower in people who received two doses of Pfizer vaccine, but could increase 25-fold after the third dose. The public is now being urged to aggressively get a third dose of the vaccine to boost the antibodies in their bodies.
According to preliminary laboratory data published by Pfizer, the third dose of the vaccine is effective against the Omicron variant. The protection gained after two doses will be significantly less in preventing infection with Omicron. However, Pfizer says that the first two doses will still prevent serious disease following Omicron infection.
The initial study conducted by Pfizer is based on a synthetic Omicron variant made in the lab, so more trial data against the real virus is needed for validation. The results from real-world will be more accurate and are expected to be published in the next two weeks.
