PETALING JAYA: A fire broke out at a wood factory in Bukit Selambau, Kedah earlier tonight, with explosions akin to fireworks also heard in the area.
The fire and rescue department said no casualties had been reported so far.
“Firefighters from the Aman Jaya, Sungai Petani, Yan, and Kulim Hi-Tech fire stations were dispatched upon receiving the call at 7.57pm. They were aided by volunteer firefighters from multiple areas,” it said.
The fire was brought under control by 10.02pm but efforts to put it out were continuing.
Three warehouses storing used copper metal, wires and batteries were also destroyed by the blaze, it said, adding that a hazmat unit has been ordered to go to the scene.
Onlookers shared videos of the scene on social media, as the blaze lit up the Bukit Selambau skyline while what looked like fireworks also shot into the sky.
