A 22-year-old Chinese woman suffering from pain and inflammation in her right ear managed to remove earwax from deep inside her ear after a minor 2-hour operation.
The woman’s right ear had been itchy and painful since last month, and she had developed verifiable inflammation in her ear canal, with pain extending to her throat, face and head, as well as frequent pus discharge and severe hearing loss. After the woman was put under general anaesthetic, doctors were able to remove ear wax from her ear, which was the size of a 10-cent coin.
According to the Ministry of Health (KKM), using cotton buds to clean ear can introduce bacteria into the ear and damage it. The swabs can also push earwax deeper into the ear.
The Ministry of Health says that people only need to clean the outside of the ear, not the inside. As they say, the ear, nose and throat are connected, so nose infections and throat infections may be accompanied by ear discomfort.
