Initially, after a friend shared with her a video of the world’s most expensive Nasi Lemak, which she thought was the most delicious from a roadside stand, her friend Norma suggested a “Norwegian Nasi Lemak Day” and decided to cook their own version of Nasi Lemak in their homes on March 2nd. Lemak
Anida told the online media outlet “World of Buzz” that it was not just for fun, but also to promote Nasi Lemak.
She said she did not expect their idea to be echoed by adults living in other countries who wanted to join in the campaign.
“At first, it was just a few of us Malaysians in Norway, but we didn’t realize that our friends in Sweden and Denmark had also expressed a desire to participate. Gradually, the number of participants grew and came from all corners of Malaysia, so we upgraded the event to International Nasi Lemak Day,” she said.
She said Malaysians from Bahrain, Switzerland, France, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States, the Netherlands and many other countries were interested in the event.
To make the event more meaningful, she said, she and her friends dressed up in traditional Malay costumes and ate Nasi Lemak to make the ceremony more meaningful.
