Miracle tsunami survivor, now 19, pursuing accounting degree.

GEORGE TOWN: In a remarkable tale of survival, S. Thulaashi, famously known as the ‘Tsunami Miracle Baby,’ defied the odds 19 years ago during the devastating 9.1 magnitude earthquake and ensuing tsunami off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia.

As a 22-day-old infant, Thulaashi miraculously slept through being swept out to sea by the initial wave and then, against all odds, returned safely to shore with the second wave. Her story garnered global attention, earning her the enduring nickname.

Today, at 19, Thulaashi is pursuing an accounting degree and actively contributes to her family’s seaside cafe, which stands at the very site of her extraordinary survival. The cafe has become a local and tourist attraction, drawing visitors keen to hear the firsthand account of the miracle baby.

Thulaashi expressed gratitude for her survival and honors the memory of the 37 lives lost at Pantai Miami annually. Her family continues the tradition of offering food to those who visit, extending generosity to those in need.

Reflecting on her past, Thulaashi acknowledged her parents’ protective measures during her childhood, emphasizing that while she loves the sea, she now practices caution, recognizing the unpredictability of natural disasters.

In a poignant annual ritual, Thulaashi’s family conducts prayers, serving as a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength that emerged from the tragic events of December 26, 2004. Despite the trauma of that fateful day, Thulaashi embraces her love for the sea, symbolizing hope and renewal in the face of adversity.

The Boxing Day tsunami, one of the deadliest natural disasters in the region, left an indelible mark on the affected countries. Thulaashi’s journey serves as an inspiring testament to the human spirit’s ability to triumph over tragedy.
