Remember to switch off the appliances.

05/02/2025

The general public has been reminded to put safety first when utilising gas and electricity-powered appliances, especially during the flood season.

The Energy Commission has shared advice on how to guarantee the safe operation of this equipment prior to, during and following floods. The list of flood hazards includes fallen electricity poles, cut electricity wires and malfunctioning gas and electrical appliances.

According to a statement from the unit, all electrical equipment should be kept high and out of the way of floodwaters. Additionally, before leaving, the electric distribution board’s main switch should be switched off, as reported by Bernama.

In order to prevent any unfortunate incidents, it was also advised that all electric connections that aren’t part of the main switch, such as solar photovoltaic systems, electric gates and gas pipes or gas cylinders, be turned off.

It advised people not to touch any poles or structures that could conduct electricity and to stay away from places with electric wires or electrical supply infrastructure, such as substations or switchrooms that might flood, in order to prevent electrocution.

Additionally, it advised against attempting to relocate any fallen power poles or broken electrical lines and to report such accidents right away to the electric utility provider.

The commission stated that before beginning any cleaning work or ensuring that any electrical appliances are in good and dry condition before turning on the main switch, the main switch on the electric distribution board and all gas mains must be in the off position for the safe use of electrical and gas appliances following floods.

It also advised individuals to seek help from licenced gas or electricity contractors and not use any electrical or appliance if they were unsure about their safety.
