Authorities have encouraged residents to use face masks after Mount Marapi, the most active volcano on the island of Sumatra, erupted on December 3 at 2.54 p.m. (local time), creating ash showers in the Agam district of West Sumatra.
Along with rumbling sounds, the eruption released an ash column containing volcanic debris up to 3 km from the summit crater, according to the Indonesian Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG).
