A single mother who met someone on social media became a victim of fraud and lost more than RM170,400. According to Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman, the 40-year-old civil servant had an Instagram meeting with a man going by the name of “Fahad Ramzan” last month. He claimed that after they connected on WhatsApp, the man made a marriage vow to her. A few weeks later, the man promised to pay her back when he borrowed RM1,500 under the guise of paying for his medical bills. In a statement released yesterday, he claimed, according to Bernama, that “he continued to ask for money by cooking up various excuses and the woman made nine cash transactions, totalling over RM170,400.”Yahaya stated that the woman reported the fraud to the Bentong district police headquarters on Sunday after realising she had been duped. The Criminal Code’s Section 420 is the basis for the investigation into this case. He cautioned the public against entertaining strangers or blindly trusting friends on social media.
