AirAsia flight seat armrests wrapped with tape Netizens: feel ashamed!

22/02/2023

The armrests of the seats on AirAsia’s direct flight from Taipei to Kuala Lumpur were wrapped in yellow tape, which made Malaysians post on social media that they were “ashamed!” Yellow tape was used to cover the armrests on the plane.

AirAsia said that the tape was only a temporary fix because they didn’t have enough spare parts.

On February 20, a man on an AirAsia flight from Taipei to Kuala Lumpur found yellow tape wrapped around the armrests of his seat. He took a picture of it and posted it on social media.

He also wrote, “I’m ashamed because people from other countries must think they’re going to a very backward country. The tape is on the plane seat.”

Temporary fix for not having enough spare parts

Singapore’s Channel News Asia (CAN) said that the head of AirAsia’s Engineering Department said in an interview that the global operator was facing a parts shortage. Since this is not a safety issue, AirAsia uses Specific Vinyl Tape, often used for airport exterior repairs, as a temporary fix to keep flights running.

“The company ordered the parts in August 2022, and they arrived last week while the repairs were being done.”
