Last year, 180,000 people were banned from leaving the country for tax delinquency!
According to the Inland Revenue Department (LHDN), as of December 31, 2022, a total of 183,122 people owed RM8 billion in taxes and were therefore barred from leaving the country. These tax evaders include foreigners who have not paid income tax, real estate profits tax or corporate tax.
The government has the power to prohibit these persons from leaving the country under Sections 104 and 75A of the Income Tax Act 1967 and Section 22 of the Industrial Estates Profits Tax Act 1976. In order to be removed from the blacklist, the person must pay the outstanding taxes.
To find out if you have been blacklisted, you can visit https://sspi.imi.gov.my/sspi/ and enter your ID number to find out if you are restricted from leaving the country.
Taxpayers are also urged to check if they owe taxes through the MyTax system from time to time.
