Method for calculating road taxes for EV
How much will the road tax on electric vehicles be if the government implements it in 2026?
In our country, the road tax for petrol cars is calculated based on displacement, whereas the road tax for electric vehicles is calculated based on motor power. Our country is currently implementing a preferential road tax exemption for electric vehicles, which will last until December 31, 2025.
According to JPJ data released a few days ago, electric vehicles will be classified into five categories: AA electric motorcycles, AB privately registered electric four-door cars, AC company registered electric four-door cars, and AD privately registered electric four-door cars. The door car and AE are company-registered non-four-door electric vehicles.
Simply put, AB and AC are Sedan and Hatchback, whereas AD and AE are MPV, SUV, Pick-up, and other models.
Group AA (Electric Motorcycles)
0 – 7.5 kW: RM 2
7.5 – 10 kW: RM 9
10 – 12.5 kW: RM 12
12.5 – 25 kW: RM 30
25 – 40 kW: RM 40
More than 40 kW: RM 42
AB and AC classes (four door cars)
0 – 50 kW: RM 20
50 – 60 kW: RM 44
60 – 70 kW: RM 56
70 – 80 kW: RM 72
80 – 90 kW: RM 160 (Add RM 0.32 for every 0.05 kW)
90 – 100 kW: RM 224 (Add RM 0.25 for every 0.05 kW)
100 – 125 kW: RM 274 (Add RM 0.50 for every 0.05 kW)
125 – 150 kW: RM 524 (increase RM 1 for every 0.05 kW)
More than 150 kW: RM 1,024 (Add RM 1.35 for every 0.05 kW)
AD and AE classes (not four-door cars)
0 – 50 kW: RM 20
50 – 60 kW: RM 42.50
60 – 70 kW: RM 50
70 – 80 kW: RM 60
80 – 90 kW: RM 165 (Add RM 0.17 for every 0.05 kW)
90 – 100 kW: RM 199 (Add RM 0.22 for every 0.05 kW)
100 – 125 kW: RM 243 (Add RM 0.44 for every 0.05 kW)
125 – 150 kW: RM 463 (Add RM 0.88 for every 0.05 kW)
More than 150 kW: RM 903 (Add RM 1.20 for every 0.05 kW)
If the road tax for electric vehicles is calculated in this way, the road tax for the BYD Atto 3 is RM903, the road tax for the BMW i4 is RM3,724, and the road tax for the GWM Ora Good Cat is RM324.
Of course, the information provided above is only for reference purposes. The government currently exempts electric vehicles from road tax. When electric vehicles become more popular, I believe the government will lower the price of electric vehicle road tax to make them more affordable to the public.
