The MoE announced a one-week delay in the school year 2023/2024.
According to a Ministry of Education statement, the new school year was originally scheduled to begin on March 12 and 13, 2023, but it has now been pushed back to March 19 and 20, 2023 to accommodate the SPM.
Schools in Group A states (Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, and Johor) will begin the new school year on March 19, 2023 (Sunday), whereas schools in Group B states (Perlis, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Malacca, Pahang, Sabah, Sarawak, Labuan, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya) will begin on March 20, 2023. (Monday).
According to the statement, the Ministry of Education will ensure that each school year has no more than 190 school days. The number of school days in each school year shall not be less than 190 days, according to the 2021 Amendment Act 1998 on Education.
Many people made a request the Ministry of Education to move the new school year’s start date from March to January. According to the Ministry of Education, this proposal can be gradually adjusted from 2023 to 2026. However, the Ministry of Education is adjusting the school’s start date. We will also consider the livelihood of teachers and students, as well as the economic impact of changing the start date.
Many people have asked the Ministry of Education to move the SPM examinations from February to March to November and December, and the Ministry of Education has stated that it will conduct discussions and research.
