Malaysia’s recycling rate increased by 33.17%.

This year, the national recycling rate increased by 33.17 percent, with a total amount of recycled goods reaching 4.626 million tonnes.

Datuk Rizalman Mokhtar, chairman of the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp), said the increase was in line with the 12th Malaysia Plan’s target of reaching a 40% recycling rate by 2025.

The Housing and Local Government Ministry was also developing the framework for the country’s implementation of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).

EPR is a fundamental approach to solid waste management that places producers in charge of managing post-consumer products. The implementation of EPR will lessen the government’s financial burden for waste management.
