SPAN is investigating an odour pollution that forced to close the Semenyih water treatment plant.

The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) is looking into the dumping of prohibited effluents that is suspected of causing odour pollution in Negeri Sembilan and Selangor last Thursday and Friday.

In a statement issued today, the commission stated that it and other enforcement agencies will conduct site visits to nearby industrial areas and conduct additional investigations to identify the substance and perpetrators.

According to SPAN, the incident is being investigated under Section 121(1)(c) of the Water Services Industry Act 2006 (Act 655), which punishes pollution of water supply systems with up to RM100,000 in fines or up to a year in jail, or both, if convicted.

Meanwhile, in SHAH ALAM, chairman of the Selangor Tourism, Environment, Green Technology, and Orang Asli Affairs Committee Hee Loy Sian stated that the Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS) and other related agencies would conduct monitoring at the Jenderam Hilir water intake point in Dengkil in case the pollution incident occurred again.

Monitoring was necessary because the source of the pollution was located outside of Selangor and was still being investigated. Heavy rain in the vicinity of Sungai Semenyih and its surrounding areas has aided the dilution process in the river.

After odour pollution was detected at the Jenderam Hilir water intake point, the Semenyih and Bukit Tampoi water treatment plants were temporarily shut down.
