If 2.5 days of weekend holidays are effectively implemented in Johor, other states might do the same.

Will other states adopt the four and a half-day official weekly holiday schedule if Johor does?

Online news reports that the Johor state government has sent the Sultan of Johor a request to change the official weekly holiday and is now awaiting the Sultan’s response. The Johor state government will announce the change in September and put it into effect as early as next year if the Johor Sultan also agrees to change the designated weekly rest day.

Since Friday and Saturday are currently Johor’s statutory weekly holidays, Sunday is the state’s working day. The fact that public and private weekly holidays fall on different days has led to numerous annoyances. Businesses struggle to manage government matters, but families with school-aged children also struggle with differing rest days.

While schools in Johor are mandated to be open on Sunday, many parents who work in the private sector get the day off. It is impossible for parents to take family vacations because of this predicament.

According to reports, the state of Johor intends to adopt a policy requiring employees to work four and a half days and take two and a half days off each week. The claimed two-and-a-half-day period consists of a half-day on Friday and full days on Saturday and Sunday. Additionally, it implies that government offices will begin to shut down starting after lunch on Friday and continue through Sunday until opening again on Monday.

I think other states will adopt the two and a half day per week approach if Johor does so successfully.
