September 10 is Mid-Autumn Festival! 7 things to note about eating mooncakes!

14/08/2022

Annual Mid-Autumn Festival is just around the corner! Mid-Autumn Festival in 2022 falls on Saturday, September 10. There are some taboos that must be avoided when eating mooncakes. Here are the top 7 taboos to be aware of when eating mooncakes.

1. Mooncakes should not be paired with congee

Mooncakes and congee are both high glycemic index foods that rapidly increase blood sugar, which is not only uncomfortable for diabetics, but also bad for one’s brain cells and will lower the fat metabolism rate.

2. Choose small rather than large

Mooncakes contain more fat and sucrose, and even if they are low-fat and low-sugar, they still have a flour component. Consuming too many can easily cause gastric distention and bloating, resulting in indigestion, loss of appetite, increased blood sugar and excessive calories.

3. People with a high body temperature should not eat too much

As they are not easy to digest and may cause internal fire to rise, leading to acne, constipation and swollen gums.

4. Contraindications to eating mooncakes for women

Avoid spicy, warm and dry foods during pregnancy. For women in labour, it is important to have a balanced diet with nutritious and easily digestible foods. Also, mooncakes, especially ice cream mooncakes, should be eaten sparingly before physiological period.

5. Eat fresh, not stale

Eat fresh, not stale, mooncakes as they contain more fat and are prone to spoil if stored for too long. People tend to buy many mooncakes at once during the festive season. When mooncakes are left for a long time, the filling will easily deteriorate and food poisoning will easily occur after consumption. Therefore, it is best to eat mooncakes as you buy them. To prevent mooncakes from spoiling, leftover mooncakes should be stored properly.

6. Eat mooncakes early rather than late

It is best to eat mooncakes in the morning or at noon. Mooncakes should be eaten sparingly or not in the evening, especially for the elderly, as they may become a factor in blood clotting and the formation of certain blood clots.

7. Eat salty ones first, then sweet ones

If the mooncakes are sweet and salty, they should be tasted in the order of salty first and then sweet, otherwise they will not taste good.
