All Malaysian citizens aged 12 or above are issued with a Malaysian Card (Mykad) by the National Registration Office (JPN). Mykad is a personal identity card that symbolises the nationality of the cardholder.
Each Mykad holder has a unique set of identification numbers. Each Mykad will have a 12-digit number, from which a lot of personal information can be obtained.
The first 6 digits of the card are the year, month and date of birth of the cardholder. The seventh and eighth digits then represent the cardholder’s state or territory, and each state will have a different number. The last 4 numbers is random.
The last number can be distinguished from the gender, with odd numbers such as 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 for males and even numbers such as 2, 4, 6, 8 and 0 for females.
There will also be a set of numbers on the back of the card, and the last two digits of the number indicate which card is your first. If it is 02, it is the second Damascus card and 03 is the third.
