Sarawak Muda wants the state’s chicken and egg price caps to be revised.

The Sarawak chapter of the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) has requested a review of Sarawak’s new ceiling prices for chicken and eggs in order to make them more affordable for those with lower incomes.

They claim that if the Sarawak government pays to the subsidies in order to assist standardise the pricing at a same rate throughout the state, this might be accomplished.

According to them, Sarawak’s districts have different ceiling prices as evidenced by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs’ (KPDNHEP) recently published ceiling prices.

According to them, the maximum price for a regular retail chicken in Limbang/Lawas is RM12.90 per kg, whereas the maximum price in major cities and towns like Kuching, where the price of a standard chicken is set at RM9.40 per kg, is RM11.40 per kg in Kapit, Bukit Mabong, Song, and Belaga.

The state of Sarawak should not pass up this chance to standardise the cost of chicken and eggs for Sarawak by providing subsidies.

Additionally, Muda Sarawak urged the immediate creation of a state-level special committee in Sarawak to oversee the execution of the National Food Security Policy Action Plan 2021–2025.

They said that in order to further enhance food security in Sarawak, this special committee should be made up of the relevant government organisations, think tanks, and diverse stakeholders.

They also hope that continuous enforcement by KPDNHEP will prevent wholesalers or sellers from inappropriately raising the price over the established ceiling price.

To protect the wellbeing of the Sarawakian people, strict measures must be adopted.
