Do not accept any ink-stained banknotes! These bills may be stolen money!

28/06/2022

According to information issued by Hong Leong Bank, banks in the country have started to implement Ink Staining Technology (IST) in Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) and Cash Registers (CRTs) to enhance the security of the machines and prevent theft and robbery attempts.

Ink staining technology is a series of high-tech technologies installed in ATMs and CRTs that effectively deter robberies or any use of violent means to open the machines. Once an attack is detected, such as drilling, burning, exploding or handling, the IST system will be activated and all banknotes inside the machine will be sprayed with an indelible anti-counterfeiting ink.

Any banknotes that are inked will be considered stolen and they will all become worthless and no longer legal tender.

The National Bank also teaches the public how to recognize inked bills. Generally, ink-stained bills come in three colors, gray, blue or green, and have a slight smell of paint. At least 20% of these bills will be inked on both the front and back, and they will also appear stained when touched by your fingers.

If you ever encounter someone paying you for ink-stained bills, you should refuse to accept them. Bank cash deposit machines (CDM) will also not accept ink-stained bills, and anyone who attempts to deposit ink-stained bills at a CDM will be questioned by the police.
