Sarawak’s civil service will continue to use English as the official language.
Sarawak’s civil service will continue to utilise English alongside Bahasa Malaysia as the official languages, State Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg announced tonight.
He stated, is in line with the Sarawak Constitution, which allows both languages to be used in official situations.
Although some have ascribed Japan’s success to its people learning the local language, Abang Johari stated that students from that country would still be required to learn English when studying in Europe or the United States.
On May 24, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali said the Public Service Department (JPA) should look into corrective and punitive actions that can be imposed on those who deliberately disregard Service Circular No. 1 2020, which empowers the use of the National Language in government service.
He explained that the endeavour to reinforce Malay as the major language among agencies and government officials has long been a high goal in the civil service.
