Prime Minister has announced a halt to chicken exports from June 1 as the domestic chicken shortage continues to fester.
According to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabi, the country exports an average of 3.6 million chickens per month and Singapore is a major exporter of chicken meat. The government will suspend the export of chicken meat for a month.
The government has announced that it will stop exporting chicken for one month from 1 June 2022 until the price and supply of chicken stabilises.
In addition, the government has introduced four other measures to address the chicken supply issue, namely better use of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry’s cold storage facilities to store broilers, removal of broiler import licences, accelerated broiler subsidy procedures and approvals, and recognition of more foreign slaughterhouses to increase imports of broilers.
At present, some large companies are not interested in participating in the government’s broiler subsidy scheme because they want the government to allow the price of broilers to fluctuate freely. Only some small companies are now participating in the subsidy scheme and the government has paid RM50 million to subsidise chicken farmers.
Under the broiler subsidy scheme, the government will subsidise 60 sen per kilogram of broiler chicken.
