A Chinese businessman was charged in court for selling an Android-branded Tmall TV box in July last year, which was not certified by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (CMC).
The defendant is liable to a fine of up to RM100,000 or imprisonment for up to six months or both for contravening sections 16(1)(b), 16(3) and 37 of the Communications and Multimedia Ordinance 2000.
The defendant pleaded guilty in court and was fined RM4,000 and if he could not pay the fine, he would have to be imprisoned for 6 months instead.
In fact, not only will the sale of uncertified TV boxes be charged in court, but the possession of uncertified TV boxes will also be triggered. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission also reminds people that if they have an Android TV box at home, they must not only ensure that the box itself is certified by the Malaysian Institute of Specifications and Research (SIRIM), but the applications inside the box must also be legal, so that they do not fall foul of the law for the sake of momentary entertainment enjoyment.
