Government is considering imposing a congestion charge whenever vehicle enters Kuala Lumpur metropolitan area.

15/03/2022

Transport Minister pointed out that the Klang Valley is expected to be better served by public transport upon the completion of MRT3 in 2030 and by then the government may follow the example of other international metropolises in imposing a congestion charge. A congestion charge will be charged whenever vehicle enters Kuala Lumpur metropolitan area.

It is understood that many international metropolises have congestion charges for public transport entering the city, including London, UK.

A congestion charge is a fee levied on road users in certain areas during periods of congestion. It is essentially an economic tool for traffic demand management, designed to limit the density of traffic on urban roads during peak hours using a price mechanism.

The congestion charge will effectively reduce the amount of traffic entering the city, easing the flow of traffic in the city and making the air in the city cleaner. This measure will also encourage people to use public transport.
