A 16-year-old underage girl became pregnant after having sex with an unemployed youth during MCO. The incident raised eyebrows after a teacher tweeted about it. Although being 16 years old is old enough to legally engage in sexual activity and does not constitute a crime of rape.
However, some believe that it is important to irrigate children with proper sex education starting in elementary school. This allows children to learn about physical threats and assaults such as pedophilia, online kidnapping and rape. Sex education is not the key to instructing people how to have sex, but to protect children from sexual abuse. It enables children to identify the characteristics of random perpetrators and be vigilant.
Cases of underage pregnancy and child sexual abuse are not new to us and happen fairly frequently. Is there something wrong with society or are we just turning a blind eye? Sexuality can be a scary issue for adults, not to mention children.
Currently, there is no sex education curriculum in our country, but parents can start educating their children by learning more from the Internet beforehand, and then slowly teaching their children to protect themselves.
While it is certainly awkward to actively mention sex, parents should break through for the safety of our children.
