Can these 8 kinds of expired food still be eaten? Even better if you store it even longer!

12/02/2022

When we buy food, the most important thing is the expiry date of the food. The expiry date is that the food has a deadline. After the specified date, it is not recommended to eat. Eating expired things, may lead to body problems like light vomiting and diarrhoea or a serious poisoning coma. But if the shelf life has expired but the food is not yet finished, we will feel very wasteful. But in fact, some food has not expired.

 1. Vinegar

Edible vinegars such as white vinegar and aged vinegar have no expiry date because they contain a lot of acetic acid and do not produce any microorganisms or bacteria. They are shelf-stable forever as long as they are sealed and no gaps are left.

2. Salt

Table salt is also one of those foods that never expires. The main component of salt, sodium chloride, is therefore very durable. Therefore, salt will not spoil if left for a long time.

3.Solid sugar

Besides salt, there is also solid sugar. The osmotic pressure of solid sugar is very high, so it can prevent the growth of microorganisms, and its shelf life is also very long, and it will not spoil.

4. Wine

The longer the wine is aged, the higher the value. The age of the wine represents the value of its existence. As long as it is more than 10% alcohol, basically, the shelf life of wine can be very long. White wine is a living example. As long as it is stored well in an airtight space, microorganisms and bacteria will not easily multiply.

5.Honey

Honey has a very high sugar content and also contains hydrogen oxide, so it does not harbour bacteria either. If the bees do not store it properly, the shelf life utility will decrease. It is not recommended to buy honey with a expiry date.

6. Dried beans

Dry legumes such as red beans, green beans, and black beans are very durable. They have a very simple shelf life. As long as they are kept in a dry and ventilated environment or taken out of the sun from time to time, they will last forever.

7. Dried mushrooms

Fresh mushrooms are good, but they do not have a long shelf life. The mushrooms that are dried or air-dried can be called “air dry mushrooms.” When they are processed, not only will they not mold, but shelf life is extended, and the food itself will not lose nutrients.

8. Dried tangerine peel

Same as wine. The longer the peel is placed, the higher the value. It is a food and a medicine. After a period of time, it must be taken out and exposed to the sun. The shelf life is not only getting longer, but the flavor is also getting stronger and stronger.

All these food can completely “ignore” the shelf life. Of course, the premise is that it needs to meet the conditions it requires, such as being sealed in a safe location.
