From February through March, rainfall will be less frequent, therefore people are urged not to carry out open burning in dry weather!
According to a statement issued by the Department of Environment, Malaysia is entering the second phase of the northeast monsoon season, which means the frequency of rainfall will decrease, resulting in hot and dry weather over the peninsula. People are urged not to open burning in dry weather.
To combat open burning and air pollution, the Department of the Environment will step up enforcement. Open burning will cause air pollution and also damage the environment.
Under Section 29(A) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974, anyone who violates the ordinance for open burning can be fined up to RM500,000, imprisoned for not more than five years or both, with a fine of up to RM2,000 for each offense.
If any illegal open burning is found, the public can report it by calling the hotline of the Department of Environment 1800-88-2727.
