Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp And Messenger were all down! Experts suspect internal negligence!
If you stayed up late last night, then you’d know the chaos that is the global ‘InternetShutDown’ that witnessed social media’s biggest platform temporary downfall. Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger appeared to be dysfunctional.
It wasn’t until this morning that Facebook gradually restored its services. Many People on Twitter started creating different memes mocking the incident.
Employees can’t get in.
The loss caused by this Facebook downtime was quite severe. According to TechCrunch, Facebook’s share price fell by 5.5%, which could be its biggest one day drop in nearly a year. The downtime affected users and Facebook’s employees, who were reportedly unable to swipe their id cards and enter the company. It is understood that Facebook eventually sent a team to Santa Clara, California, to manually restart the company’s servers before Facebook gradually restored the system.
High probability of insider negligence
Cloudflare technical director John Graham-Cumming said on Twitter that “Facebook and its related assets disappeared from the internet when the BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) was updated.” In addition, many information security experts believe that it is more likely that Facebook’s downtime was an internal human error, as evidenced by the fact that employees were unable to swipe their id cards to enter the company. The company’s security expert Jake Moore agreed that the downtime could have been caused by human error or a bug in the software. While there is some probability that a hacker caused the incident, it’s more likely that Facebook screwed up internally.
