The government classifies monthly RM2208 as a poor family!

In order to reflect the current household expenses and living costs more accurately, the government has adjusted the definition of Pendapatan Garis Kemiskinan(PGK), that is, families whose monthly income is below RM2208 will be classified as poor groups.

At present, the poverty-stricken population in Malaysia is 5.6%, that in cities is 3.8%, and that in rural or semi-urban areas is 12.4%. Of the 10 poorest counties and cities in Malaysia, 9 are in East Malaysia and 1 is in West Malaysia, among which 8 are in Sabah.

In the past five years, the median income of B40 low-income families increased from RM3000 in 2016 to RM3166 in 2019. The average income of B40 low-income families increased from RM2848 in 2016 to RM3152.

In addition, in the 12th Malaysia Plan, the government plans to make Malaysia a high-income country in 2025, that is, the average household income is RM10,000 per month.
