Attention to Ladies! You have the right to do this when you are stopped by the police at a roadblock, remember to protect yourself!

16/02/2021

The government implemented the second round of movement control orders and set up more than 300 roadblocks across the country to control the number of people going out. When passing a roadblock, the police have the right to check the ID card and driver’s license. If the other party could not provide the driver’s license, the police can issue a fine, but they cannot arrest the other party if they do not have a driver’s license, nor can they ask for a contact number.

Several days ago, a few women encountered incidents of being accosted and harassed by the police while passing roadblocks. The police officers obtain the women’s contact numbers and contacted them in private to accost them. There were also women who were threatened by police officers to untie their shirts, otherwise they would issue a ticket failed to comply with relevant laws, such an absurd situation! If you ever encounter the police who abuse their authority, you have the right to reject it! Especially women, remember to protect yourself rather than being fully obedient!

What you can do if you ever encounter the police who abuse their authority?

  • Write down the information and call the police

The incidents of women being sexually harassed by police officers have made others vigilant. If you encounter a police officer who strikes up and harass you when you pass a roadblock, remember to write down his code number and name, and call the police immediately.

  • Do not provide your contact number

Recently, a lady was asked for her name and contact number by a police officer when she passed a roadblock. After she returned home, she received a private message from the police officer. Datuk Nor Aziyah, a lecturer from Faculty of Law at National University of Malaysia, said that the police have the right to check their ID cards and driver’s licenses. If the other party could not provide their driver’s license, the police can issue a fine, but they have no right to arrest the other party and request a contact number by not having a driver’s license.

  • Refuse to submit “coffee money”

If the police threaten you to submit “coffee money”, otherwise you will be issued a fine, you have the right to refuse his request and you can make a complaint afterwards.

Once you faced with sexual harassment or other unreasonable requests from the police, you should take the initiative to report it. Complaints can be made through the 24-hour service hotline 15999 (Talian Kasih) and 019-2615999 (Whatsapp). Or call 03-8880 5651/5625/5627. Ladies, remember to stay alert and protect yourself under any circumstances!
