No SSD expansion support for PS5 at the initial launch! Reserved for use with future updates!

06/11/2020

The PS5 SSD expansion function is temporarily unavailable at the beginning of the launch, so players who purchase PS5 must manage their storage space well. Although the PS5’s SSD loads super fast, its 825GB internal storage size (the available space may be less than 700GB) may fill up quickly, and games like “Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War” will exceed 100GB.

Although the PS5 disassembly process showed that the expansion of the PS5 SSD is a very simple process, SONY has revealed that players will not be able to expand their storage space when the PS5 is launched. In a statement to the media, SONY stated that the SSD extended functions are “reserved for future updates.”

Although Xbox Series X can be used for storage expansion when it is on the market, Seagate storage expansion cards must be used, and PS5 will support more storage options. PS5 compatible SSDs will be reviewed by SONY as they need to meet certain standards. Each hard drive needs to be a Gen4 device, providing speeds faster than 5.5GB/sec, and suitable for PS5.
