According to Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), 200,3374 (80%) of 3G network base stations have been shut down at this stage. There are still 50,486 (20%) of 3G network base stations still in operation and MCMC hopes to close these base stations by March 31.

MCMC originally planned to completely shut down the 3G network base stations by December 31, 2021, but the severe flooding in the country in December last year has disrupted the schedule of shutting down the 3G network base stations.

It is understood that there were 2,097,121 active subscribers on the 3G network before, while 1,656,269 people have already switched from the 3G network to the 4G network, and the rest will switch to 4G after the 3G network is shut down.

Telecommunications company is currently working to upgrade the 4G network base stations to ensure that subscribers can enjoy a better quality of 4G network services.

MCMC noted that from January to December 2021, it received 200,675 complaints, with 4G network quality remaining the biggest concern. Johor Bahru was the area that received the most complaints, followed by Petaling, Negeri Sembilan and Kuala Lumpur.
