5 Ways to Improve Typing Speed and Accuracy

02/02/2022

Most, if not all, jobs demand strong typing abilities and entail some computer work. To develop code for computer and software programmes, information technology workers, for example, must be proficient typists. Because a minor typo might cause a system-wide problem, accuracy is just as critical as speed.

1. Make sure you’re starting from the right place.
It’s critical to employ optimal hand placement when improving your typing skills. To begin, maintain your thumbs hovering over the space bar and your fingers positioned over the home row keys (left hand over the A, S, D, and F keys, and right hand over the J, K, L, and ; keys). You can reach adjoining keys by moving your fingers slightly from here. Always return your hands to this initial position. These conventions are intended to assist you in becoming more familiar with the keyboard. As you get more skill, you can try out numerous versions of this starting position to discover the one that feels most natural and comfortable for you.

2. Keep your hands up and don’t glance down.
Rather than staring down at your hands, concentrate on your computer screen. This can be challenging at first, particularly if you haven’t learned the correct positioning of the keys. Looking at the screen, on the other hand, will help you increase your accuracy by allowing you to catch typos as they happen. As you practise, you’ll learn to memorise the location of the keys, allowing you to type faster.

3. Maintain a healthy posture
It will be easier to type faster if you sit in an upright position. Try switching to a straight-backed chair or working at your desk if you’re used to slouching in your chair or working from the couch.

4. Position your hands in a comfortable position.
Typing for long periods of time might be difficult with the wrong hand location. So that you are not reading your screen or typing at an angle, the space bar on your keyboard should be centred with your body. Rest your elbows on the table when typing, and keep your wrists slightly lifted. Your wrists should never be bent or angled in a dramatic way.

5. Exercising!
Nothing is learned overnight, and you must practise every day if you want to increase your typing accuracy and speed. Many websites, such as Typing Academy, TypingClub, and How To Type, provide free typing skills tests and practise. When it comes to typing exercises and examinations, it’s critical to take your time. Rushing through them will simply result in additional mistakes at initially. As you become more comfortable with the keyboard, trust that your speed will automatically improve.

Improving your typing abilities will not only make life easier for you as a student, but it will also help you in your future profession. Don’t quit up if it takes a lot of practise to show improvements. In no time, you’ll be typing like a pro!
