37 flood victims in Langkawi have been transferred to PPS
Following heavy rain since 4am, a total of 37 flood victims from 10 families from Kampung Atas in Mukim Padang Mat Sirat were housed at a temporary evacuation centre (PPS) at Dewan Syifa tonight.
The PPS opened around 8 o’clock, according to Langkawi District Civil Defense Force Officer Capt (PA) Ahmad Shahfikri Darus.
Around 6 o’clock, the houses of the people started to flood. Ayer Hangat and Kuah, two further locations in this district that were also affected by the flooding, have not yet had PPSs opened as a result of the areas’ receding water levels.
They would continue to periodically check the water levels of the major rivers and the areas vulnerable to flooding, according to Ahmad Shahfikri.
The Melaka River is overflowing its banks near Kampung Atas and the Padang Mat Sirat market in the Padang Mat Sirat district, according to a check by Bernama yesterday night.
In the meantime, eight homes in the Kuala Muda district’s Kampung Sungai Bongkok, Mukim Gurun neighbourhood were also flooded at around 5 p.m. yesterday after more than three hours of rain, but no PPS was opened because the water had receded.
