32.3 million registered vehicles in Malaysia!

30/05/2022

The total number of registered vehicles in Malaysia is 33 million, which is comparable to the population of our country, with an average of one car per person. Our country has also become the country with the largest number of registered vehicles in Southeast Asia, and it is not surprising that there are often traffic jams on the road.

Minister of Transport pointed out that our cities are developing rapidly, but road construction is stagnant, coupled with imperfect public transportation, which is one of the reasons for the frequent traffic jams on the road.

At present, MRT light rail system is only built in the major cities of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, so when people want to go out of the city to travel or work, they can only choose to travel by car.

Not only that, but the MRT light rail system is also very imperfect, stopping at only a few major stations. If people choose to take the MRT light rail, they still need to walk a long way in the hot weather to reach their destination.

According to the data as of December 31, 2020, there are a total of 32.3 million cars in our country, and the average annual increase of new cars is 1.2 million. Another reason why registered vehicles have become the first in Southeast Asia is that the cost of car ownership in our country is too low, as long as you have the ability to bear about RM500 per month car loan, you can become a car owner.

The price of gasoline in our country is also very low, RON95 gasoline is only RM2.05 per liter. If the government raises the price of gasoline to RM3.00 or RM4.00 per liter, many people will choose to travel by bus, and there will certainly be fewer vehicles on the road.
