According to the Malaysian Income Tax Act 1967, whenever a person resides in Malaysia for more than 182 days (i.e. six months) and has a job or income, then he/she will be required to file a tax return.
Filing a tax return and paying tax are not the same. Filing a tax return is simply submitting your income for the past year to the Inland Revenue Department (IRD), while paying a tax return is submitting the required tax to the IRD.
In order to facilitate and encourage people to report their income for the past year, the Inland Revenue Department (LLHDNM) has introduced an electronic tax filing service, known as e-Filing, for many years.
What should you do if you have filed your tax return in previous years but this year you forgot the password of your tax account when you filed your tax return? There are three ways to get your password: by email, by SMS and by visiting the Inland Revenue office.
If you want to get your new password via email, you can visit https://mytax.hasil.gov.my/ and click on Terlupa Kata Laluan on the login page, then enter your ID number and click on Hantar and the new password will be sent to you via email.
Alternatively, you can choose to get your new password via SMS. For personal tax returns, you can enter HASILEF<space>IND<space><ID number> and send it to 38888. example: HASILEF IND 111111111111.
For corporate tax returns, you can enter HASILEF<space>OEF<space><ID number> and send to 38888. example: HASILEF OEF 111111111111. 50 cents will be charged for each cell phone message.
The third method is to go directly to your nearest Inland Revenue office and ask for a password reset. You can call the Inland Revenue Department hotline at 1-800-88-5436 for any questions.
