21-Year-Old’s Unconventional Commuting Method Goes Viral: Flying to Work Cheaper than Renting

13/06/2023

Sophia Celentano, a 21-year-old from South Carolina in the United States, is well-known online for her unusual way of transportation. She still resides at home and commutes by plane once a week despite being offered an internship in New Jersey. Surprisingly, Sophia decides to use this extreme form of commuting because buying a plane ticket is less expensive than renting an apartment.

Sophia claimed in her TikTok tale that she had landed an internship in New Jersey, close to New York City. She chose not to rent a costly nearby space because the job was not full-time and just required her to be in the office once per week. Instead, she opted to commute by plane every week, rising at 3 a.m. According to Sophia, living at home and traveling by plane costs her about $100 in plane tickets, $100 in transportation, and $25 in food each week.

The entire cost for the ten weeks comes to about $2,250, which is a big saving over the $4,250 she would have paid on local short-term accommodation. Sophia thinks that this arrangement not only saves her money but also allows her to spend time with her family and partner in addition to the early wake-up calls and grueling travel schedule.

After the video went viral, comments regarding Sophia’s unique strategy flooded the internet. Her strategy was viewed as harsh by some online users, who claimed that it would eventually get tiresome. They questioned the value of any employment, saying things like, “Wouldn’t this be exhausting in the long run? Wake up at three in the morning for no job. There were lots of people who agreed with Sophia’s choice, though. Later, she learned that a Georgia coworker of hers, notably one from Atlanta, had chosen a comparable long-distance commuting strategy.
