186,346 people have been barred from leaving the country as of July this year due to non-payment of taxes.

According to Inland Revenue Department (LHDN), a total of 186,346 people have been barred from leaving the country as of July this year due to non-payment of taxes. Those involved included company directors and had outstanding tax payments of RM12.9 billion.

Government has the power to prohibit the persons concerned from leaving the country under sections 104 and 75A of the Income Tax Act 1967 and section 22 of the Industrial Estates Tax Act 1976. The persons concerned must pay the outstanding taxes in order to have their names removed from the blacklist.
