Google I/O 2023 has officially started. This annual developer conference and new product launch will foretell the next development direction of this technology giant. It is an event that technology enthusiasts are very concerned about. At the Google I/O 2023 conference held early this morning, Google added more AI features to its apps, including Gmail, Google Photos, Google Maps, Google Drive, YouTube, and more.
Gmail’s “Help Me Write” feature
In our daily use of Gmail, Google has provided many useful functions. For example, when replying to English emails, some suggested options that may be suitable will be provided below so that we can reply quickly. In addition, Google announced that it would join the AI-driven “Help Me Write” in this update. This function will automatically compose the appropriate content of the whole email according to the current email. This function is similar to ChatGPT Write, but I am unsure what languages are supported.
Google Maps Adds Immersive Maps
As for the updated part of Google Maps, Google will add a new “Immersive View Immersive Map” feature, using computer vision and AI to fuse billions of street views and aerial images to build this rich digital world. In addition, this function can add more immersive preview content, such as checking the current traffic flow and travelling path through automatically generated street view images, confirming the current weather conditions, and even predicting the next weather changes.
It is reported that this update is expected to be launched later this year and will be first applied in Amsterdam, Berlin, Dublin, Florence, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Paris, Seattle, San Francisco, 15 specific cities including San Jose, Tokyo and Venice.
Google Photo adds artificial intelligence technology
In addition, Google has also added the “Magic Editor” function to Google Photos, which provides artificial intelligence technology similar to “Magic Eraser”, which can edit specific areas and backgrounds individually and place specific people in photos. The position is removed, and the part that does not appear in the photo is automatically generated through AI so that the overall photo composition can better meet the user’s needs. In simple terms, it means that you can more easily edit every object in the photo.
The next generation super language model PaLM 2 debut
In addition, Google also launched the next-generation super language model PaLM 2. PaLM is a large language model announced by Google in April 2022, using 540 billion parameters for training, about three times that of GPT-3. This time, PaLM 2 has been further improved on PaLM, with multi-language, reasoning and coding functions.
PaLM 2 received additional training on multilingual texts, covering more than 100 languages. It was remarkable for its ability to understand, generate, and translate nuanced texts, including idioms, poems, and riddles. It also passed the “mastery” level of the advanced language proficiency exam. And PaLM 2 will also be used on the Bard chatbot, which means Bard has become more powerful.
